Barley news Australia: Australia expecting another very large crop

Australia’s barley-growing conditions have been good this year: some Victoria and South Australia regions need rain; altogether it looks like another very large crop, around 13 mln tonnes, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their September report.

Exports of feed barley to Arab countries and Southeast Asia are strong, stocks will be fairly low by harvest time 2021.

There are new markets for Australian malting barley in Central and South America. Based on demand, large sales should also be possible to Canada and the U.S., but maybe borders will remain shut in the absence of phyto-sanitary protocols between the countries. In any case, Australia is the most attractive origin of malting barley in the world, as to price and quality.

Barley shipments in January-June were: 280 thousand tonnes of malting barley, of which 119 thousand tonnes to Vietnam, 69 thousand tonnes to Mexico, 53 thousand to Peru, and 24 thousand to Japan. Feed barley exports totalled 4.44 mln tonnes, of which 2.04 mln to Saudi Arabia, 667 thousand to Thailand, 495 thousand to Japan, and 341 thousand to Vietnam.
